Biology Unit - Sustainable Ecosystems
Learning Goals
Biology: Ecology Students will: · identify the earth's four spheres & describe the relationship that must exist to maintain diversity & sustainability (2.1, 3.4) · compare & contrast biotic and abiotic characteristics of sustainable & unsustainable terrestrial & aquatic ecosystems (2.1, 2.2, 3.1) · describe the limiting factors of ecosystems & explain how these factors affect the carrying capacity of an ecosystem (2.1, 3.3) · describe the relationship between cell respiration & photosynthesis in energy flow & matter cycling within an ecosystem and how humans disrupt the balance achieved by these processes (2.1, 2.5, 3.2) · identify factors related to human activity that have an impact on ecosystems and explain how these factors affect the sustainability of these ecosystems (2.1, 3.5) · plan & conduct an investigation into how human activity affects soil composition or fertility, and based on this data, explain the impact of this activity on the sustainability of terrestrial ecosystems & describe initiatives to lessen the impact (1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.3) · plan & conduct an investigation into how human activity affects water quality, and based on this data, explain the impact of this activity on the sustainability of aquatic ecosystems & describe initiatives to lessen the impact (1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.4)
